Academics
MILA
MILA® (Multiple Interactive Learning Algorithm) is a pedagogical method wherein the classes are divided into 20 minute lectures followed by activities that range from POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning), SCALEUP, PLTBL (Peer Led Team Based Learning), CABLE (Critical Appraisal Based Learning), Critical Pedagogy, JIGSAW, Concept Mapping, Game based Learning, and Role Play. A combination of these methods are also implemented to provide the students with better and deep understanding of simple or complex concepts in a subject.
StudyFLEX® System
Another mind-blow, students-friendly approach is the implementation of CBCS. In this system, the student is given a choice to choose their course, faculty, and duration. In providing such flexible system, the students can satisfactorily choose the course based on his needs giving him/her an added advantage of the subject they are taught.
Academic Record Management System (ARMS)
The ARMS (Academic Record Management System) is a web portal that is meant to store much-needed database of students everything from attendance, assignments, notifications, fee payment, hall ticket printing, result publication, revaluation applications, On Duty Approvals, course selection, course completion, sms integration, parent communications etc., to name a few. This software enables the teacher to keep track of the students’ progress in all arena.
Flipped classes
Flipped classes consist in supplying the students with videos of the conceptualized topic before the student attends the course and the topic. This revolutionary technique has been followed for many years in many top-notch institutes across the globe. Flipped classes are meant to act as preparatory phase for the students giving them enriched knowledge on the courses.
Expert Talk
This is an exemplary attempt to supply with real-life examples of people who succeeded after facing immense challenges. In an expert talk such an eminent person shares their experience to the young budding engineers, thereby, giving their life story as a stepping stone for the students’ success in their career.
Department Library
“A good library will never be too neat, or too dusty, because somebody will always be in it, taking books and staying up late reading them”
The Department Library caters to the information needs, not only to the concerned department but also of the institutions’ faculty, students, and staff. Collection comprises of printed documents such as books, reports, theses, standards, journal publication related to Civil Engineering. A collection of 400 different titles comprising a variety of disciplines are available for the student and the faculty to refer to. The library provides a quick reference for the faculty and the students and also exercises lending and photocopying books and journals. The timings of the library is in conjunct with the institutions’ working hours.
Co-curricular activities
'All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy', so goes the saying. Hence, education should not be only about subjects taught within the classrooms but also about broadening our minds and looking beyond classroom study. We have an active participation by students and faculty members in organising various events and also participate in events outside our campus.
One of the frequent events is the Viksha conducted annually. Students of Civil Engineering participate actively in this event not only from SSE but also from other institutes.
Apart from the above, numerous seminars and workshops (National and International) have been conducted in order to upgrade knowledge, while simultaneously exposing various facets of Civil Engineering to the students.
Other research-oriented events such as seminar, workshop and conferences are also being held every year. Some of the glimpses of the conferences and seminars are given
Industrial Visits
Industrial Visits to various renowned industries are made every semester to provide students with practical knowledge related to the subject in day-to-day life and its implementation in the industry. Some of the organizations visited include Port trust, Indian Meteorologial Department, Chennai, Water Treatment Plants and Sewage Treatment Plants at Chembarabakkam and Nesapakkam, Chennai respectively, and many other industries.
Company In-plant Training and Internship
As a part of the curriculum, it is required for the students in second, third and final year to attend in-plant training at leading government, non-governmental and industrial organizations. By doing so, students achieve a great sense of practicality, and knowledge in the domain of civil engineering. In addition, students of final are given a golden opportunity of undergoing paid-internship programme to several organizations such as Ultra Tech Cements, Ramco Cements etc.
Students’ Project
The students of SSE area provide an ambience that encourages them to carry innovative projects on upcoming, current trends in civil engineering. This enables them to apply the various technical and analytical skills that they acquired during their period of study. This improves their creativity and also gives them a chance to explore various options available to them in pursuing their higher studies/jobs.
Another striking aspect of project work is that students of civil engineering course are given the chance to develop the capability to carry out their final year project work in current trends of various disciplines and in standalone mode. This encourages them to learn the intricacies of the subject and the work in a self-sustained manner.
There are a number of opportunities for students to get hands-on experience while enrolled as a student at Saveetha School of Engineering, including being part of a student team or participating in an undergraduate research project.
Mentoring System
In this, a dedicated faculty is allotted for a small group of students for one-on-one concentration and to discuss and guide the students towards the path of knowledge andenhancing the skillset including improvement of personal traits.
